A significant number of Boston-based companies have adopted remote or hybrid work models. Major firms in technology, finance, and education have led the way in implementing flexible work arrangements. Many organizations have adopted hybrid work models, allowing employees to split their time between home and the office. Bostonians, like many others, have been adjusting to the work-from-home trend in several notable ways. Here are some key aspects of how this shift is playing out in the city. Many people are investing in their home office setups. This includes ergonomic furniture, high-speed internet, and tech upgrades. Sit-stand desks that can be adjusted for sitting or standing are popular for improving posture and reducing discomfort. Chairs with lumbar support, adjustable heights, and armrests help prevent back pain and promote better posture. Reliable and fast internet is essential for smooth video calls and efficient work. Ergonomic keyboards and mice can reduce strain and increase comfort during long working hours. Using shelves, desk organizers, and cable management solutions helps keep the workspace tidy and efficient. Some remote workers are investing in high-quality printers and scanners for handling documents and paperwork. Physical tools like whiteboards or notebooks can be useful for brainstorming and tracking tasks. Small space heaters or fans can help maintain a comfortable temperature, especially if the home office is in an area that doesn’t have good climate control.These can provide additional comfort for those using standing desks or who spend long periods at their desks. When asked, anecdotally, employees report feeling "lonely" in the workplace. While more employers offer hybrid remote work, with 2-3 days in the office, it begs the question: is that enough to solidify those workplace connections that support employees' sense of belonging and loyalty, or are we contributing to isolationism?
